Q: Foie gras: Yes or no?
A: Yes! Are you kidding?
Nora Ephron passed away yesterday and writers have flocked to the presses to document and honor her life and legacy. I’m more Pulp Fiction than Michael, but as a food connoisseur it is important to touch upon her contributions to the food world, mainly Julie & Julia that catapulted the food and blogging worlds into sun force. Julie & Julia inspired the inner Julia Child in all of us, making the world a little better. A little more people knew about beef bourguignon, Amanda Hesser and the mandolin. All in all, making for a tastier world. In contrast to Nancy Meyers’ films whose food depictions are extremely over the top (think of Jane’s bakery in It’s Complicated); Ephron’s, while still grandiose, make sure to incorporate the realness of a place by filming on location (Athenian Inn in Sleepless in Seattle) and the role that food plays in bringing people together (family food fight in Hanging Up). She really liked food, this one. Will the next Nora Ephron please stand up?
