Food Trucks + Poetry = Genius!

The following is an interactive posting. Read and follow the links.

In contrast to many of my posts, where I bash Miami for being a food wasteland, I’ve been very proud of my dear old city lately. The sudden surge in popularity of both food trucks (here are some local trend articles, in the case that you’ve been living under a rock: Miami Street Food Court Schedule, Despite the Chill, People Still Want Food Trucks) and the local art community (Art Basel, Miguel Paredes, Wynwood Art Walk, Design District Art Walk, art festivals, art parties, art clubs, etc.) in the past few months has been tremendous.

And after coming across an interesting new trend (yes, click it) in my ever bulging mailbox, I came up with a crazy, but possibly brilliant idea. Because I’m a writer, I usually tend to read something while I eat. I’m pretty sure a lot of you out there do this too. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a coordinated effort between Miami’s food trucks and University of Wynwood? (You still don’t know what University of Wynwood is? You need to get on that NOW, dude.) So, every time you go to buy a taco from, say, Jefe’s or a sandwich from Yellow Submarine, it would come with a side of fiction, poetry, or even a quote from a local writer. It can even be done a la Chinese fortune cookie style.

Care for a limerick?

While, I am aware that UW will be hosting O, Miami in April, an ambitious countywide and month long effort to expose poetry to every single resident; I think it would be great to make it last longer than just one mere month. Food is the best medium as it is more accessible to the masses, especially to the ones that don’t leave the confines of suburban Miami-Dade County or in the food truck arena, the ones with a lower expenditure budget.

Craving more info on Miami’s food truck scene? For the best coverage, visit Burger Beast. He’s the unofficial “official” of Miami’s food trucks, or at least that’s what I’ve deemed him. But, as always, don’t forget to visit your favorite local food blogs on a continual basis to get up to the minute info on everything you want to know about Miami’s food scene from events to gossip and everything in between. All bloggers link to their favorites, just do some research, and see what you like.
